Damp on the chimney breast?Fix the stack, not the plaster.
Loose pots, crumbling mortar, cracked flaunching, lead lifted at the base. Most chimney damp starts on the stack, so the survey goes up to it. Get in touch with the postcode and we will book it.
Moss was sliding off our tenement roof into the gutters every winter. They cleared the lot, took the gutters back to clean metal and treated the slates. First dry close in years.

Lead flashing round the chimney on our slate roof had lifted and the bedroom ceiling was marking. Surveyed it, priced it in writing, redressed the lead properly. No drama, no upsell.
Craig B., Bearsden Google
Flat roof on the kitchen extension started dripping during a downpour. They came out in the rain, patched it and stopped the water, then came back and put EPDM over the whole thing.
Margaret K., Shawlands Google
New guttering and fascias the full length of the house. Old timber was rotten behind the boards, which they showed me before touching it. Tidy job and the price did not move.
Tom R., Bishopbriggs Google
Chimney stack was shedding mortar onto the pavement. Repointed, new flaunching, cowls on both pots, lead tray at the base. Explained every step and left the close spotless.
Aileen D., Partick Google
Two slipped slates and a cracked ridge after the January storms. Fixed the same week, matched the slate, and the written quote came before anyone went up a ladder.

Where chimney damp starts
The stain is on the breast. The fault is on the stack.
A chimney stack takes the weather from four sides and the rain runs straight down it. Once the mortar joints go, water gets into the brick and tracks down into the chimney breast, which is why the plaster is wet a floor below the roof. Cracked flaunching lets it in round the pots. Lifted lead lets it in at the base.
The survey goes up to the stack and photographs the joints, the flaunching, the pots and the lead. You get the photographs and a plain list: what needs doing now, what can wait, and whether the stack is worth keeping at all. Then the price goes in writing, which is how we work on a stack, a valley or a whole roof.
Mortar joints washed out and soft
Flaunching cracked round the pots
Pots loose or leaning
Lead at the base lifted or split
What the repair covers
Repointed, reflaunched, capped.Or taken down cleanly.
Chimney repair starts with the joints. Repointing rakes the old mortar out and fills the joints with a mix that suits the brick, so the face sheds the rain instead of drinking it. New flaunching seals the top round the pots, and a cowl on a disused flue keeps the rain and the birds out while the stack still breathes.
The lead where the stack meets the roof is stripped and dressed new rather than patched, because that joint is where most of the water gets in, and it is the same lead flashing detail we redo on valleys and abutments. Where a stack is past saving and the fireplace is long gone, we take it down below the roofline, make good the slates and felt, and the roof is watertight before we leave.

Eight more roofing services.Same firm, same method.
A chimney is rarely the only thing the roof needs, so these are the other jobs we do, and every roofing service we offer is surveyed first and priced in writing, the same as the stack.
Guttering & Fascias
Rotten fascia boards, sagging gutters and soffits that let the birds in, fixed as one run of roofline. We replace fascias and guttering together so the brackets hold and the water goes down the pipe.
Lifted lead flashing round chimneys, valleys and abutments is where most Glasgow leaks start. We strip the old lead work, dress new lead properly and seal the joint so the ceiling stays dry.
Ponding felt, blistered seams and a flat roof that drips in a downpour. We repair what can be saved and lay EPDM rubber roofing over what cannot, with the edges detailed for the rain.
Slipped slates, cracked tiles, a wet patch that shows up after every front. A roofer surveys the whole roof first, then the repair is priced in writing so you know exactly what is being fixed.
Slate or tile pitched roofing, repaired or replaced to match the street and carry the weight properly. Ridge, hip and valley work done in the same job, with the felt and battens checked underneath.
One roofing contractor for the full re-roof: strip, timber checks, felt, battens, new slates or tiles and the leadwork. Scaffold is sorted, the site is kept tidy and the price is fixed in writing.
Moss holds water against the slates and slides into the gutters every winter. Roof moss removal lifts it off by hand, clears the gutters and treats the roof so it stays off for far longer.
Storm damage, a leak coming through the ceiling or slates hanging over the pavement. An emergency roofer makes it safe and stops the water first, then the full repair is priced in writing.

Straight answers
Asked on mostGlasgow roofs.
If your question is not here, send it through the contact page and we will answer it about your roof rather than roofs in general. The longer answers, with the reasons behind them, live in our roofing guides.
01Why is there damp on my chimney breast?
Almost always because the stack above it is letting water in. Rain gets through washed-out mortar joints, cracked flaunching or lifted lead at the base, soaks into the brick and tracks down inside the wall until it shows on the plaster. Drying and repainting the breast does nothing until the stack is repaired, so the survey starts on the roof.
02What is chimney repointing and does my stack need it?
Repointing is raking out the soft or missing mortar between the bricks and filling the joints fresh. Your stack needs it when the joints are open enough to hold water, which usually shows as mortar in the gutter, green staining on the brick or damp inside. The survey photographs the joints so you can see the state of them for yourself before the chimney repair is priced.
03Can you fit a cowl to a chimney that is no longer used?
Yes. A disused flue still needs to breathe, or the damp collects inside the stack, so we fit a cowl that keeps the rain and the birds out while letting the air move. If the fireplace is bricked up below, we check there is a vent and say so if there is not.
04Should I take the chimney stack down instead of repairing it?
Sometimes. If the stack is badly cracked, leaning, or serves nothing and you would rather be rid of the upkeep, taking it down below the roofline and making good the roof is a clean job and a permanent fix for the damp. The survey gives you both prices in writing so you can compare repairing and removing with the photographs in front of you.
05Will chimney repair fix a leak at the base of the stack?
If the leak is at the base, the fault is usually the lead rather than the brick. Lead that has lifted, split or been patched with sealant lets water run straight under the slates. We strip it and dress new lead into the joint as part of the chimney job, and the slates round the stack are checked while we are there, with any slipped or cracked slates listed separately as a roof repair so you can decide on them on their own.
06Which areas do you cover for chimney repair?
Glasgow and the towns around it: Rutherglen, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Giffnock, Renfrew, Cambuslang, Clarkston, Milngavie, Clydebank, Kirkintilloch, Newton Mearns, Paisley and the places between, each listed with its distance from the city under the areas we cover. Send the postcode through the quote form and we will confirm before the survey is booked.
